We are proud to be involved with the Tri-Cities Wet Weather Mat Program this year. During the month of February we will be volunteering our time to serve meals and set up sleeping quarters to give clients a full belly and warm shelter for the night.
If you would like to join us please let us know and we can connect you to the leaders of the program. There is more information below.
An ambitious “mobile” cold wet weather shelter program has been operating in the Tri-Cities of Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody since December 1st, as an interim measure to the creation of full-service permanent shelter and housing.
This new program is being operated under HPI funding by the Hope for Freedom Society (HFFS), a contractor of outreach services to BC Housing. The program, which has a capacity of 30 mats, is hosted by a local church for a period of one month each season before moving on to another host church site. HFFS uses its 2 – 15 passenger vans to transport homeless clients to the shelter site, precluding the need for the sites to be walk-in accessible.
The mat program has been averaging about 15 clients per night, with a maximum of 20 – about 10% of the estimated Tri-Cities homeless population.
Back Packs for Hope provide the clients with a backpack full of essential items. They are filled with scarves, hats, gloves, toothpaste, deodorant etc. Donations of backpack items and/or money are appreciated. For a full list of contents please get in touch with us.
